Core philosophy for great project management

Welcome to the 4th episode of leadership vitamins. Thanks for continuing to show interest in this important topic. I hope you enjoyed the first 3 vitamins - about leading up and down - and ultimately within. In this 4th episode I will share my core philosophy for great project management. This has evolved over my years working with project management.

In order to become great project managers I have found the illustrated components to be at the core to succeed as project managers. We create meaning around a shared dream. Management structures help us with the frames and are way too often overrated. Without the right "Leadership mindset" and courage we won't succeed with our projects in the real world.

Core philosophy for great PM

  1. Outset in a shared dream

  2. Management structures to set frames

  3. Leadership mindset and courage to navigate the real world

In the video I elaborate on the core philosophy.

Reflection

  • Does your project have a compelling dream or purpose, that is known by all?

  • Are you aligned in your organisation about the main structures for good project management?

  • How do you navigate “the real world” with plans that do not hold or people that do not deliver as agreed?

  • Do you dare to look in the mirror when faced with a challenge and accept that you might be part of the problem/solution?

I have written an article on how to manage a change project through both structures and the right mindset - Article in Danish, Article in English

It presents a concrete case and how we managed using elements of this core philosophy.
